Adaptive Cycling: Expanding Outdoor Adventures for All Abilities
Adaptive cycling technology has revolutionized outdoor recreation for people with mobility challenges, creating more inclusive opportunities for individuals with limited mobility above or below the waist. Whether for exercise, adventure, or simply enjoying nature, adaptive cycling has become a life-changing activity for many wheelchair users and others with compromised mobility. At GO Unlimited, we are passionate about providing access to the outdoors and empowering individuals of all abilities to enjoy the freedom of cycling. We offer several types of cutting-edge adaptive trike-style cycles that allow our participants to explore hundreds of miles of both paved and dirt trails throughout the stunning landscapes of New Mexico.
A Range of Adaptive Cycles for Different Abilities
Our fleet of adaptive cycles includes a variety of models designed to meet different experience levels and physical capabilities. From mountain biking enthusiasts to those looking for a leisurely ride on paved trails, we have something for everyone.
Adaptive Mountain Bikes (aMTB)
Our Adaptive Mountain Bikes, or aMTBs, are among the most versatile and capable cycles we offer. These cycles feature three-wheeled, trike-style designs with full suspension and electric assist, allowing riders to confidently traverse rugged trails that would otherwise be inaccessible. Unlike traditional bikes, which are limited to flat or gently sloping terrain, aMTBs enable individuals with mobility challenges to tackle trails that are far from ADA accessible, providing an unmatched sense of adventure and freedom.
The models we currently offer include industry-leading options from Bowhead, Reactive Adaptations, and Lasher. One of our Lasher cycles is specially equipped with quad grips for riders with limited hand function or compromised upper body mobility, making it accessible for those with more severe impairments. This specialized feature allows riders with disabilities to enjoy the outdoors without compromising safety or comfort.
Our aMTB bikes are not limited to traditional mountain biking trails. We use them to access a wide range of outdoor activities, including wildlife viewing, fly fishing, hunting, picnicking, sightseeing, and even enjoying local events like the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. These bikes serve as an incredible tool for expanding accessibility to outdoor spaces that may have seemed out of reach before. To learn more about the trails we ride, check out our Interactive Map page, where you’ll find photos and detailed descriptions of some of our favorite routes.
Traditional Handcycles
For those looking for a less rugged, yet equally enjoyable experience, our traditional handcycles are a perfect choice. These three-wheeled trike-style cycles are manually powered by hand cranks, providing an excellent way to get exercise while exploring scenic trails. Handcycles are ideal for individuals who prefer paved surfaces and gentler rides but still want the benefits of outdoor cycling.
One of the most popular locations for handcycling in New Mexico is along the picturesque Rio Grande Bosque trails in Albuquerque. These trails provide breathtaking views of the river, lush greenery, and wildlife, offering a peaceful and enjoyable experience for handcyclists of all skill levels. Whether you’re looking for a quiet solo ride or a group cycling adventure, the Bosque trails are a favorite among our participants.
