Hermann Madrid recently embarked on a memorable elk hunt in the Gila Mountains of New Mexico, made possible by adaptive technology and the support of GO Unlimited. Having drawn a mobility-impaired elk tag, Hermann was determined to experience the wilderness on his terms. The day before the hunt, Cody Pisz from GO Unlimited arrived at camp with a Mako cycle, a specialized adaptive device that would enable Hermann to traverse the rugged terrain away from the roads and fully immerse himself in the natural beauty of the Gila wilderness.

The hunt was exhilarating. The elk were bugling and responding to calls. The excitement in the air was palpable. Cody and Hermann traversed the rolling meadows and pine-covered hills, setting up in different locations in hopes of drawing an elk close using their elk calls. The wilderness was alive with sound and movement, and Hermann was experiencing it all firsthand in a way he hadn’t been able to since his accident.

The hunt reached a thrilling climax when a mature bull elk stood its ground on a hillside, just within Hermann’s comfort range. Nearby, several other bulls were bugling, adding to the intensity of the moment. Hermann took a shot at the bull but unfortunately missed. Despite this, the day was filled with unforgettable experiences, and for Hermann, the true reward was the chance to be fully immersed in the wilderness once again.

Reflecting on the experience, Hermann shared how he hadn’t been able to experience the woods in such an intimate way in years. The adaptive Mako cycle gave him the freedom to explore and hunt in the backcountry, a freedom he deeply appreciated. For Cody and the team at GO Unlimited, it was a pleasure to assist in providing this life-changing experience for Hermann.

This hunt serves as a powerful example of how adaptive technology can open up the great outdoors to individuals with mobility impairments, allowing them to experience the thrill of hunting and the peace of nature in a way that may have once seemed out of reach. As more adaptive technologies emerge, the opportunities for inclusive outdoor adventures continue to grow, showcasing the beauty and accessibility of outdoor spaces like the Gila Mountains.

At GO Unlimited, we are dedicated to creating more moments like these, where individuals can experience the outdoors in meaningful ways, no matter their physical limitations. Hermann’s story is a reminder of the transformative power of nature, and the importance of making it accessible to all.
